How do you like them apples? Plus a giveaway from Tofutti!

I walked past the apple bins today and thought I might like one. Then I started looking at them, and I thought: afternoon apple tasting! As I looked at them, I realized that they aren't just a bunch of red apples. They are pretty distinct in color. It turns out the tastes and textures are distinct as well.

I gathered me up eight red apples: Fuji, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Liberty, Macintosh, Pinova, Sommerfield, and Spartan. After lining up the multi-apple shot above, I tasted a wedge of each apple.

Fuji: sweeeet, not too much taste, very crisp texture.

Honeycrisp: awesome crisp texture, deep winey flavor, sweet but not overly so.

Jonagold: slightly astringent, sweet, slightly mealy.

Liberty: winey taste, slightly sweet and sour, just a touch mealy.

Macintosh: this is a tricky, contradictory apple. Great balanced flavor, but the texture is SO mealy, ecch. I think it would be a great cooking apple, but I made the most terrible face about the texture.

Pinova: rich and winey, slightly sour, dense texture. My second favorite.

Sommerfield: similar to the pinova, but a slightly lighter flavor. Third place.

Spartan: sweet and crisp, more flavor than the Fuji, but only just. (Photo below.)

Verdict: go buy yourself a sack of Honeycrisp apples and savor them!

  1. I can't get tofutti where I live but Mr treehugger is going to England for Christmas and he can get me some there.

  2. Ahh, I will always have a soft spot for bagels of all types. Back when I was a student some friends and I spent a week in Brooklyn with hardly any money and we used to buy big bags of bagels to munch on through the day. I have great memories of walking over the Brooklyn bridge munching on cinammon and raison ones.

  3. I love potato flour bagels, and plain bagels :o)

  4. Cinnamon and raisin all the way, with plain Tofutti, maybe a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. Makes a wonderful breakfast!
Thanks for the apple tasting, I think your preferences are similar to mine! I hate mealy apples. In the early Autumn we get tiny little Spartans in the UK. They are so good! I've never seen honeycrisps for sale here:(

  5. I'd love some Tofutti Cream Cheese to make pumpkin cheesecake for Thanksgiving!

  6. My god, my husband loves the Tofutti sour cream- even more than the non-vegan stuff!

  7. Any bagel is better with a smear of Tofutti cream cheese and a squish of agave. As for my cutie pies- you know all about them :) And they all love cream cheese (SuzyHB)

  8. I use tofutti cream cheese all the time! Peanut butter, tofutti, and blackberry jelly on a bagel is my favorite! But i also make awesome pumpkin pie with them :D

  9. I can't live without the Tofutti cream cheese! Love it!

  10. Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese really is BETTER THAN CREAM CHEESE!

  11. I want more of those amazing ice cream cones! Yum! Please let me win! *fingers crossed*

  12. OHMYGOODNESS...I LOOOVE Honeycrisp apples!!

One of my fav ways to enjoy them:

    Tons of fresh, baby spinach
Chop a Honey Crisp apple into cubes
1/2 of an avocado, sliced or cubed (I like it better cubed)
    A touch of olive oil
    A pinch of salt
If you feel like getting crazy, squeeze in a little lemon
    Toss, toss, toss
    Enjoy pure salad heaven

  13. I love that you did an apple tasting! I work at an apple orchard every fall and I love getting all the different varieties.

  14. I'm a fan of sesame bagels, toasted, with tofutti cream cheese and a little agave nectar

  15. I've been gluten free for almost a year now... ii miss bagels. Lately I've been eating the new GF Udi's Bagels. They are pretty awesome - but they definitely aren't doughy, rich new york bagels.

  16. Cinnamon raisin bagels!

  17. Bagels: either salt or whole grain (depending on my mood), with bacun-scallion Tofutti from Sweetpea Bakery. SO good!
