Ode to Soy Curls, and a Soy Curls Giveaway!

I wish this was my recipe for sweet and sour Soy Curls, but it isn't, and I don't think I could improve upon it, so I will suggest that you try this recipe. I scattered a bit of scallion over mine and served it with broccoli, sprinkled my basmati with toasted black sesame seeds, and gave the whole plate a douse of sriracha. I think the trick to working with Soy Curls is to really press the water out. I've used them with great success in Taymer Mason's creole spaghetti recipe in Caribbean Vegan. There is a great article in the Oregonian about Soy Curls with a recipe by Julie Hasson that I want to try next. Anyway hurrah for Soy Curls--they are delicious!

  2. Eeeee! Soy Curls! I've only had them once so far (I can't get them in Austria) - I used them to turn some leftover veggie soup into a filling stew. They're magical.

  3. I am dying to try Soy Curls! Since I haven't had them, I will tell you how much I love curly fries. Especially with Cajun seasoning. Since turning vegan, I rarely go to the types of places that serve them. Sigh. Another reason to get a deep fryer?

  4. I'm not really sure what soy-curls are, they're not native to my part of the world! Are they like TVP? I'd love to be adventurous and try them!

  5. I have never had "official" soy curls, but I buy a very similar product in bulk at a (wonderful!) vegan store near my parents' place. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find them in Denmark, so I don't get to cook with them too often. My favorite way to use them is Thai curries, but your meal looks so good I might try that recipe one day, too. :)

On the other hand, I adore curly fries (whoa, I typoed & put "curly friends"--creepy!)!

  9. I'm in the UK so have never had them. In fact I'd never heard of them til this last month and suddenly they seem to be everywhere with people saying how great they are. I would be very excited to get to try some! Curly fries I am very familiar with however. I have a local bar that does an amazing vegan sweet potato burger with curlies on the side.

  10. Woah, I've never had soy curls, but they look pretty awesome. I don't care as much for curly fries. I'm a shoestring kind of girl.

  11. Soy curls are the bomb. I love to use them in so many dishes. If you don't tell your omni friends, they probably won't know they are eating a vegan dish. Julie Hasson's new book Vegan Diner has a salad with smoky soy curls on it. The soy curls are used as a kind of "bacon". I love them that way. I've also had them in a curried chicken salad. MMMmmmm.

  16. I'd love to find out what soy curls taste like. We have several TVP products in Germany, but they all look different. It would be interesting to know if they also taste different.
